A woman who claims to be the daughter of the leader of the Sinaloa cartel was arrested at the San Ysidro port of entry on Friday, October 12th in San Diego. Alejandrina Gisselle Guzmán Salazar, who is 31 years old, attempted to cross into the United States on foot using a passport that was not her own. Officials, who asked to remain anonymous, told the Associated Press she admitted to being the daughter of Joaquín Archivaldo “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera.
The woman told authorities she was on her way to Los Angeles where she intended to give birth to a child, as she is 7 months pregnant. Last year one of El Chapo’s wives gave birth to twin daughters at Antelope Valley Hospital in Lancaster, CA. Emma Coronel, the 22 year old wife, holds U.S. citizenship and could not be detained.
Guzmán could face charges in regards to presenting fake documents at the port of entry. However authorities are more interested in pressing Guzmán for details and information on her alleged father. Analysts have long suspected El Chapo from distancing himself from many family members for their own safety and are unclear of the information the alleged daughter can provide.
Guzmán appeared at the federal courthouse in San Diego on Monday with attorneys Jan Ronis and Guadalupe Valencia, who both have represented notable drug traffickers including a former rival of El Chapo, Benjamín Arellano Félix. Guzmán has a bail hearing set for October 25th.
